How to Stop Chasing Big Success and Still Get Ahead in Business

Have you ever felt like you’re running on a hamster wheel in your business? You’re working hard, but you don’t feel like you’re getting anywhere. You set these huge goals—double your revenue, launch that big program, become an industry leader—and then months go by without much progress. You feel stuck, frustrated, and maybe even a little defeated.

I’m Margie Mader, LMFT, CHT, founder of Growth and Healing Wellness Center, and I want to share something with you that changed everything for me and my clients: the Small Wins Framework.

Here’s the truth that nobody talks about enough: chasing big success all the time is exhausting. It’s also not how real progress actually happens. Real, lasting growth comes from small wins—those tiny victories that add up over time to create something amazing.

Let me show you how this works.

What Are Small Wins?

Small wins are exactly what they sound like—little victories that move you forward. They’re the opposite of those massive, overwhelming goals that make you want to hide under your desk.

Think of it this way: if your big goal is to climb a mountain, a small win is taking one step up the trail. Then another. Then another. Each step doesn’t feel like much on its own, but before you know it, you’re halfway up the mountain.

In business, small wins might look like:

  • Sending one follow-up email to a potential client
  • Writing for 15 minutes on that blog post you’ve been avoiding
  • Organizing one section of your messy filing system
  • Making one phone call you’ve been putting off
  • Updating one page on your website

These actions don’t sound impressive. They won’t make headlines. But here’s what makes them powerful: they’re doable. You can actually complete them. And when you do, something magical happens in your brain.

Every time you accomplish something—even something small—your brain releases a little hit of dopamine. That’s the feel-good chemical that makes you want to keep going. Small wins create momentum. They build confidence. They prove to yourself that you CAN make progress.

The problem with only focusing on big goals is that they take forever to achieve. You might work for months without feeling successful. That’s draining. It kills motivation. Small wins give you that success feeling every single day, which keeps you moving forward.

The 3-Step Small Wins Framework

Now let me walk you through my simple three-step framework that you can start using today. I’ve used this with countless clients at Growth and Healing Wellness Center, and it works whether you’re a therapist, coach, consultant, or any other type of business owner.

Step 1: Choose Your Metric

First, you need to pick ONE thing to focus on. Just one. I know you have a million things you want to improve in your business, but trying to do everything at once is exactly why you feel overwhelmed.

Your metric is the area where you want to see growth. It should be specific and measurable. Here are some examples:

  • Number of client inquiries per week
  • Minutes spent on marketing each day
  • Number of social media posts published
  • Hours of billable work completed
  • New email subscribers added to your list
  • Follow-up calls made to potential clients

Pick the metric that would make the biggest difference in your business right now. Not the one that sounds most impressive—the one that would actually help you most.

Write it down. Make it clear. “I want to increase my client inquiries” is too vague. “I want to get 3 new client inquiries per week” is specific and measurable.

Step 2: Create Your Micro-Action

This is where the magic happens. A micro-action is a tiny, specific action that takes 15 minutes or less and moves your metric forward.

The key word here is TINY. We’re not talking about “revamp my entire marketing strategy.” We’re talking about actions so small that you can’t talk yourself out of doing them.

Let’s say your metric is getting more client inquiries. Your micro-actions might be:

  • Spend 10 minutes responding to comments on your social media
  • Send one email to a past client asking for a referral
  • Update your website contact form to make it easier to use
  • Post one helpful tip on your business Facebook page

If your metric is completing more billable hours, your micro-actions might be:

  • Block off one 2-hour focus session in your calendar
  • Turn off notifications for 30 minutes while you work
  • Prepare your workspace the night before so you can start immediately

The micro-action should be so easy that you’d feel silly NOT doing it. That’s how you know you’ve made it small enough.

Step 3: Celebrate Every Win

This step is the one most people skip, and it’s actually the most important one.

When you complete your micro-action, you need to celebrate. I’m serious. This isn’t optional.

Celebrating doesn’t mean throwing a party (though you could!). It means acknowledging your win in a way that feels good to you. You might:

  • Check it off your list with a satisfying pen stroke
  • Do a little happy dance at your desk
  • Tell someone what you accomplished
  • Give yourself a mental high-five
  • Put a gold star on your tracker (yes, really!)
  • Take a moment to feel proud

Why does this matter? Because celebration reinforces the behavior. It tells your brain, “Hey, that felt good! Let’s do it again!” Without celebration, your micro-actions just feel like more items on an endless to-do list.

At Growth and Healing Wellness Center, I encourage all my clients to find their own celebration style. Some people love visual trackers where they can see their progress. Others prefer journaling about their wins. Find what works for you.

Your 14-Day Small Wins Plan

Ready to put this into action? Here’s your 14-day plan to start building momentum with small wins.

Days 1-2: Set Up

  • Choose your one metric (the area where you want to see growth)
  • Identify 3-5 micro-actions that support that metric
  • Print out your habit tracker (more on that below)
  • Decide how you’ll celebrate your wins

Days 3-7: Build the Habit

  • Do ONE micro-action each day
  • It doesn’t have to be the same action every day
  • Track it immediately after completing it
  • Celebrate each win, even if it feels silly at first
  • Notice how you feel after each small win

Days 8-14: Increase Momentum

  • Continue your daily micro-action
  • If it feels easy, add a second micro-action to your day
  • Review your tracker and notice your progress
  • Adjust your micro-actions if needed (make them smaller if you’re struggling, or slightly bigger if they’re too easy)
  • Celebrate your consistency

Your Printable Habit Tracker

I’ve created a simple habit tracker you can use to track your small wins. Here’s how to set it up:

Create a simple grid with:

  • Days of the week across the top (or dates for your 14-day challenge)
  • Your micro-actions listed down the left side
  • Empty boxes where you can check off or color in each completed action

You can make this as simple or as fancy as you want. Some people love colorful markers and stickers. Others prefer a basic checklist. The important thing is that it’s visible and easy to use.

Put your tracker somewhere you’ll see it every day—on your desk, on your bathroom mirror, or on your refrigerator. The visual reminder helps, and watching those boxes fill up creates motivation.

Why This Works (Even When Big Goals Don’t)

The Small Wins Framework works because it’s based on how our brains actually function, not how we wish they functioned.

Big goals are important for direction, but they’re terrible for daily motivation. They’re too far away. Too abstract. Too overwhelming.

Small wins give you immediate feedback. They prove you’re capable. They create positive momentum. And here’s the beautiful part: when you stack enough small wins together, you end up achieving those big goals anyway—you just get there without burning out.

At Growth and Healing Wellness Center, I’ve watched business owners transform their practices using this exact framework. They stop feeling stuck. They start feeling capable. And their businesses grow—not through massive overnight success, but through consistent, sustainable progress.

Your Next Step

You don’t need to overhaul your entire business today, you don’t need a perfect plan or ideal circumstances.

You just need to take one small action.

Choose your metric. Pick one micro-action. Do it today. Celebrate it. Then do it again tomorrow.

That’s how you stop chasing big success and start getting ahead—one small win at a time.

Remember: progress doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be consistent. And consistency is built on small wins.

What will your first small win be?
